The Wave

Jack Sylvester
Year 10+ Elizabeth College

You gaze out over the purple ocean; reflecting the beautiful summer’s sunset. The waves barrel over perfectly and you picture yourself an hour before, surfing. The only noise is the gentle crashing of the waves and the mist kissing the air.

You picture yourself catching a wave. You start to paddle – one, two, three. You look back and see the water start to rise. Everything comes together as the ocean takes over your board, lifting you up and creating its own hill for you to ride. You realise that you are one with nature. Throughout life you may have struggled to find purpose, however simplicity will always return you to serenity.

You return to consciousness and begin to drop down the wave. You rise up smoothly, moving in pure flow, no thought, just feeling. The wave carries you like how you walk on the earth - natural, free, effortless. Your mind rests only on the wave, the motion, the link between earth and your body.

Sometimes you are on the peak of the wave and on a high. However, eventually you must drop down as the wave breaks. Don’t worry, the lows aren’t all bad. They give you the momentum to climb back to the top of the wave.

Sometimes, you may mess up and lose the wave. However, If you are patient, another one will come. Falling isn’t failure. Everyone falls. It’s part of the sport.

If you look behind too often, your hips rotate, you lose balance. You also lose balance when you look too far ahead on the wave. You lose focus and fall. You must stay in the present and adapt as the water beneath is unpredictable.

This wave is your life. Highs and lows. But most importantly, it’s balance that brings everything together.
