Out Of This World, Literally

Ella Gurney

The blazing red will blind you as you step into the long forgotten town on Mars. As the day washes away and the moon comes to play the long forgotten town on Mars becomes a blur. The dark arrives once more and the day fades away.

In the morning a burned toast smell fills the air, the inactive boat lies at Moon Bay as it waits for a passenger to ship across the Marzanian Channel, but nobody today. The Mozians of the moon laugh at the vandalized, bashed and discarded village.

Nobody has any kind of memory about the once filled town on Mars. The planet is a fire ball burning the wooden houses that perch on it. Nobody questions the Marzanian’s choice to leave this nightmare. But did they leave? Did the sizzling heat force them off? Did they perish from the harsh heat? I guess we’ll never know.

The sugary water of the Marzanian Channel will seep through the damp rowing boat and char your legs when you step into the ancient boat. As you sail across the Channel you overflow with hope, but as you step onto the decrepit ashes, you know that desire to see the unknown was wasted on this embarassment of a planet.

You wander around the deserted village and see the lion like floor swallow the timberland panels. This world is like no other, you're glad you came, aren’t you? But as you question your choice, the hot tar ground ignites your dry feet and you jump like you’ve never jumped before, land and sprint to the boat. It's gone! But you can see the previously paddled water jiggle. You run around the planet and see… nothing. You turn around and see a fire. On Mars? In space?

“I’ve been waiting for you…”
